Vellicola sp. #15

Vellicola sp. #15
Maximum size:  4.5 mm.

Identification:  This species has a moderately thick shell with more prominent spiral striae on its apex and base than in Vellicola sp. #13. The animal is translucent-brown patterned with clusters of compact white rosettes separated by irregular rings of red-brown flecks. Younger animals have a yellow background. It may be distinguished from Vellicola muscarius by its more compact rosettes.

Natural history:  Vellicola sp. #15 is a rare species found in rocky habitats from < 1 to 5 m (< 3 to 16 ft). It occurs at moderately protected to moderately exposed sites. It shows a diurnal activity pattern when held in dishes.

Distribution:  Maui.

Taxonomic notes:  This species was formerly listed as a color form of juvenile Vellicola muscarius and its shells may be difficult to distinguish from shells of that species (pending further work). It was first recorded in Hawaii from Kapalua Bay, Maui by CP on April 22, 1996.
