Pontohedyle sp. #1
Maximum size: 0.75 mm.
Identification:
This is a tiny, elongate animal with short tentacles on its head and spicules embedded in its skin. (Note 1)
Natural history: Pontohedyle sp. #1 is a rarely seen species that lives insterstitially in sand.
Distribution:
Oahu.
Taxonomic notes: It was first
recorded
in Hawaii from Kaneohe Bay, Oahu by the meiofauna team during MarineGeo in May, 2017.

comments:
Note 1: Katharina Jörger sent the following information: "bow
shaped head appendages, as in most acochlidians the head-food complex
can be retracted into the visceral sac when disturbed, monaxone
spicules, externally like Pontohedyle milaschewitchii but likely an independent cryptic lineage (to be confirmed via molecular data)."
