Noalda sp. #2
Maximum size: 3-4 mm.
Identification:
This
species
has a translucent-cream body densely flecked with opaque white. It has a
thin, largely internal shell. A dorsal foramen in the posterior portion
of the mantle reveals
part of the shell.
In contrast to Noalda sp. #1, it has two long "tails," two spiral brown
bands on its shell and a head shield that rises to a narrow point on its posterior margin.
Natural history:
Noalda
sp. #2 is known from three animals found at moderately
exposed sites at 5-6 m (16-20 ft).
Distribution: Big Island and Maui: may be known from Japan and the Philippines.
Taxonomic notes: This species is similar to "Noalda
sp. 6" in Gosliner, et. al. (2018) but it lacks the yellow spots of
that species. However, animals from Japan and some animals from the
western Pacific also lack yellow spots. It was first
recorded in Hawaii at Kawaihae, Big Island by David Prutow on Sept. 12,
2022.
