Geitodoris sp. #4
Maximum size: 8 mm.
Identification:
This
is a yellow animal flecked with white. The notum is variably flecked
with brown and the flecks may cluster to form dusky patches. The margin
is decorated with white granules (glandular?). The rhinophores are
stout and conical with apical brown mottling. The branchia are
dusky-yellow, becoming darker apically.
Natural history:
Geitodoris sp. #4
is
known from only five animals. The four Maui animals were found in the
low intertidal at a moderately
protected site. The 1999 Maui animal laid a yellow egg mass with a
ribbon that had a circular cross section. The egg mass was 5.5 by 5 mm
with 2.2 broadly open whorls. The eggs were yellow embedded in a clear
matrix and the ribbon was about 0.5 mm in diameter.
Distribution:
Maui and Oahu.
Taxonomic notes:
It
was first recorded in Hawaii from Hekili Point, Maui by CP on May 5,
1993. It may ultimately turn out to be something other than a Geitodoris sp.
