Cavolinia globulosa (Gray, 1850)
Maximum size: 5 mm shell
length.
Identification:
Shells
of
this species are transparent amber with slightly darker
highlights. They
are strongly inflated with a short, sharply curved apex. Animals are translucent-cream with amber highlights.
Natural history:
Shell fragments of
Cavolinia globulosa
are moderately common in sand samples. Live animals are seen occasionally at night in off-shore waters.
Distribution:
Big Island, Maui, Niihau and Midway: widespread in the Indo-Pacific.
Taxonomic notes: Cavolinia
mexicana (Collins, 1934), described from fossil material, may be
a synonym.
