Unidentified Velutinid sp. #7
Maximum size: 12 mm.
Identification:
This
is
a flattened species with a very firm texture. The dorsal surface is
covered with radiating rows of fine tubercles and occasional larger
tubercles that are tinged with yellow. The background color is gray with
radiating rows of black flecks and scattered white flecks.
Natural history: Unidentified velutinid sp. #7 is known from one animal found in an algae wash taken in silty Halimeda kanaloana at 6-10 m (20-30 ft)..
Distribution:
Maui.
Taxonomic notes: This is a distinctive species of uncertain affinity. The very firm texture distinguishes it from Lamellaria spp. while the low profile and lack of prominent dorsal ridges distinguish it from Marseniopsis spp. It was first recorded in Hawaii from Kenolio Park, Maui by PF on Dec. 5, 2014.
