Pelagella joubini (Risbec, 1928)
Maximum size: 7 mm.
Identification:
This
is a cream animal densely flecked with dark brown. There are broad
lateral shelves on the notum with smooth margins that are variably
spotted with
dark brown and orange.
Natural history:
Pelagella joubini
is a moderately common species found in moderately protected to exposed
rocky habitats as well as in Halimeda
kanaloana beds at depths
of < 1 to 9 m (< 3 to 30 ft). It lays a cream, oval egg mass.
Distribution:
Big Island, Maui, Oahu and Kauai: widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific.
Taxonomic notes: Goniodoris aspera
(Alder & Hancock, 1864) may be an older name for the species (see Scott
Johnson's site). It's listed as Goniodoris cf. joubini in Kay & Young, 1969. It was probably first recorded in Hawaii from
Kewalo Basin,
Oahu in Dec., 1962 (Kay and Young, 1969). It appears in many sources as Goniodoris joubini.
