Notobryon wardi
Odhner, 1936

Notobryon wardi
Maximum size: about 20 mm.

Identification:  This species has four short, broad lobes on its notum. It's body is translucent-brown flecked with slightly iridescent white and with cloudy brown blotches on its sides. There are usully fine, olive-brown lines on the short, transparent gills. There's a prominent crest on the notum posterior to the lobes.

Natural history:  Notobryon wardi is rare on Maui with about five animals known. Maui animals were in Halimeda kanaloana beds at depths of 8-9 m (25-30 ft). On Oahu, Scott Johnson found one animal on a rubble bottom at 45 m (148 ft) and Terry Gosliner found one in a dredged sample from 110 m (328 ft). Another was found in an artificial tide pool on the Big Island. It can swim by lateral flexing if disturbed.

Distribution:  Big Island, Maui and Oahu: widely distributed in the western and central Pacific.

Taxonomic notes:  It was first recorded in Hawaii off Hale'iwa, Oahu by Terry Gosliner in Aug. 1973 (dredged). The species was named after M. Ward who collected the first specimens.
