Lamellaria sp. #2
Maximum size: ( )
Identification:
This
species
has a dorsal surface intricately
patterned
with a network of opaque lines. It also has broad, conical tubercles in
the center of its dorsum. The background color ranges from white through
yellow to bright orange-red and violet.
Natural history:
Lamellaria sp. #2
is a moderately rare species found in Halimeda
kanaloana beds at a depth of 9-20 m (30-65 ft).
Distribution:
Maui and Oahu: probably widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific.
Taxonomic notes:
There is some uncertainty in separating this species from other listed species of
Lamellaria. In
addition, there's a
possibility that the yellow/white/dull orange animals could be different
from the
red ones based on the more superficial appearance of the white pigment
in the latter. Placing the dull orange animals with the others is
particularly uncertain since its dusky highlights could suggest some affinity
with the larger animal included under Lamellaria sp. #7. It was first recorded in Hawaii from Airport Beach, Maui by CP on Sept. 1, 1994.
