Hydatina zonata (Solander in
Lightfoot, 1786)
Maximum size: 40 mm shell
length (Kay, 1979).
Identification:
This species has a thin, strongly inflated, cream shell marked with
wide spiral brown bands. The body is cream grading to maroon marginally with a white marginal band.
Natural history: Although Hydatina zonata
is typically considered to be a rare
species found in sand at depths of 30-60 m (100-197 ft), the live Maui
animal was found at a depth of less than 3 m (10 ft).
Distribution:
Maui and Oahu.
Taxonomic notes:
This species is listed in Kay, 1979, Edmondson, 1946, Quirk & Wolfe, 1974, Morris, 1974 and Tinker, 1958 as Hydatina albocincta (Quoy &
Gaimard, 1825) which is probably a synonym (see discussion on the Sea
Slug Forum).
