Gymnodoris sp. #13
Maximum size: 10-12 mm.
Identification:
This
species
has
a yellowish
body decorated with orange spots and superficial white
patches that have better-defined margins than those of Gymnodoris okinawae.
The pustules on its notum are conical rather than blunt and there is
usually an hourglass-shaped white patch between the rhinophores. The gill
circle is probably not complete posteriorly.
Natural history:
Gymnodoris sp. #13
is a moderately common species found in protected to moderately exposed rocky habitats at
depths of < 1 to 3 m (< 3 to 10 ft).
Distribution:
Maui and Oahu: widely
distributed in the
Indo-Pacific.
Taxonomic notes: It was probably first recorded in Hawaii from Hekili Point,
Maui by CP on Dec. 1, 2001. We previously listed these animals as
juvenile Gymnodoris okinawae. However, subsequent finds support
splitting due to size overlap, lack of intergrades and morphology. It's
probably the same as "Gymnodoris sp. 3" in Gosliner, et. al. (2018).
